AKUH celebrates world pharmacists day with walk and ceremony

KARACHI: The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) marked World Pharmacists Day with an awareness walk and a cake-cutting ceremony at the AKU Sports and Rehabilitation Centre, highlighting the vital role pharmacists play in patient safety and better health outcomes.

Aligned with the global theme “Think Health, Think Pharmacist”, the event brought together AKUH leadership, pharmacy professionals, faculty members, and staff to recognize pharmacists’ growing contributions to patient-centred care. Faculty and students from Salim Habib University also joined the celebration, underlining the value of academic and clinical collaboration.

“Pharmacists bring specialised expertise that is essential to effective treatment,” said Dr Farhat Abbas, CEO of AKU Health System, Pakistan. He noted their key role in optimising medication plans, preventing adverse interactions, educating patients, and supporting long-term disease management.

Director of Pharmacy Mr Shamim Raza reflected on the profession’s evolution, saying pharmacists are now integral members of multidisciplinary care teams, moving beyond dispensing medicines to contributing to diagnosis and ensuring medication safety.

The gathering underscored that as healthcare becomes more complex, pharmacists’ expertise and vigilance remain indispensable in ensuring treatments heal rather than harm.
