KARACHI: Prof. Dr. Hina Siddiqui, Professor of Organic and Medicinal Chemistry at the H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry, International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), United Kingdom, in recognition of her contributions to the advancement of chemical sciences.
Prof. Siddiqui obtained her PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Karachi under the supervision of renowned scientist Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary. She subsequently progressed through research and academic positions at ICCBS and also undertook advanced research training at the University of Kansas, USA, and postdoctoral training at the University of Tübingen, Germany.
With more than 70 research publications in international journals to her credit, Prof. Siddiqui has also secured a US patent and several local patents, besides authoring a book and contributing chapters to scientific publications.
Her research focuses on the design and development of new anti-infective agents, including antibacterial, antiprotozoal and antiviral compounds, as well as inhibitors of clinically important enzymes. Her work also involves expanding chemical space through the development of new small-molecule libraries for medicinal chemistry research.
Prof. Siddiqui has supervised more than 35 MPhil and PhD scholars in medicinal chemistry, including students from African and Asian countries. Her academic work has contributed to mentoring young scientists, strengthening research capacity and promoting international scientific collaboration.
She has received several national and international competitive research grants and delivered more than 70 plenary and invited lectures at workshops, symposia and conferences in Pakistan and abroad.
In addition to her position at ICCBS, Prof. Siddiqui serves as an adjunct professor at national and international universities. She is also an OIC-COMSTECH Distinguished Scholar, contributing to scientific knowledge exchange and capacity building among researchers in OIC member states.
Her election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry marks international recognition of her sustained contributions to chemistry, medicinal chemistry research and scientific capacity building.
