KARACHI: In a major step toward improving urban health and sanitation, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC) has announced a comprehensive administrative overhaul to strengthen water supply and sewerage services across the city.
Acting on the directives of Mayor Karachi and KW&SC Chairman Barrister Murtaza Wahab, the corporation has introduced four new operational zones to modernize its system, streamline water distribution, and ensure safer, more reliable access to clean water — a critical factor for public health.
According to the official notification, Zone One will cover Malir and Korangi districts under Chief Engineer Mohammad Ali Shaikh; Zone Two, comprising East and South districts, will be led by Chief Engineer Aftab Alam Chandio; Zone Three, covering West and Keamari districts, will be supervised by Chief Engineer Ghulam Mohammad Hub; while Zone Four, responsible for Central district and Sohrab Goth Town, will be managed by Chief Engineer Shah Rukh Hussain.
KW&SC CEO Ahmed Ali Siddiqui and COO Engineer Asadullah Khan described the restructuring as a “public health-oriented move” to ensure better water quality, prevent leakages and contamination, and strengthen wastewater management systems.
They emphasized that a reliable water network is essential for preventing outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid, and hepatitis, which continue to affect Karachi’s population due to aging pipelines and poor sanitation infrastructure.
“This initiative reflects Mayor Wahab’s commitment to improving not just infrastructure but also the health and well-being of Karachi’s residents,” said Siddiqui. “A modernized and efficient water management system directly contributes to cleaner neighborhoods and healthier communities.”
Public health experts have long linked Karachi’s sanitation challenges to disease prevalence. The new zoning system is expected to enhance coordination among field teams, accelerate complaint resolution, and support preventive health measures through improved water and sewerage services.
