AKUH Receives Third Consecutive International Platinum Award for Heart Attack Care

KARACHI: The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) has received its third consecutive Platinum Performance Achievement Award from the American College of Cardiology (ACC), recognising its consistent delivery of evidence-based and guideline-directed care to patients experiencing heart attacks.

The award is based on AKUH’s participation in the ACC Chest Pain-MI Registry, through which hospitals continuously evaluate their performance against internationally established clinical standards and identify opportunities to improve patient care.

Dr. Farhat Abbas, T.I., S.I., CEO of AKU Health System, Pakistan, said the third consecutive international recognition endorsed the institution’s commitment to evidence-based and patient-centred cardiac care.

“It reflects our teams’ dedication to delivering safe, high-quality care and continuously improving outcomes for our patients,” he said.

Participation in the registry enables AKUH’s clinical teams to use data to strengthen the quality and consistency of heart attack care—from timely assessment and diagnosis to intervention and ongoing treatment.

Dr. Javed Majid Tai, Director of the Cath Lab and Site Director of the National Cardiovascular Data Registry at AKUH, said the registry allowed clinical teams to measure care continuously against established standards and identify opportunities for improvement.

“This commitment to continuous learning helps us deliver more consistent care for patients experiencing heart attacks,” he said.

The initiative also provides an opportunity to study changing patterns of cardiovascular disease in Pakistan, including the growing concern over heart attacks among younger adults. These trends highlight the importance of recognising risk factors early and strengthening both prevention and treatment.

Dr. Farhala Baloch, Assistant Professor in the Section of Cardiology at AKUH, said understanding changing patterns of heart disease was essential for improving prevention and care, particularly as heart attacks among younger adults become an increasing concern.

AKUH said the third consecutive Platinum Performance Achievement Award reflected its continued commitment to improving cardiac services and delivering safe, high-quality heart attack care.
