Dr. Abdul Bari Khan Named Recipient of 2026 Hovey Impact Award

KARACHI: Dr. Abdul Bari Khan, Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN), has been named the recipient of the 2026 James and Carol Hovey Eisenhower Fellowships Impact Award for developing one of the world’s largest healthcare networks providing quality treatment to millions of patients free of cost.

Dr. Bari Khan, an Eisenhower Fellow from Pakistan in 2004, was selected for the fourth annual Hovey Impact Award, which recognises outstanding achievements by Eisenhower Fellows in creating a positive and lasting impact in their societies.

The award carries USD 10,000 to help advance and sustain the work of the Indus Hospital & Health Network. Dr. Bari Khan was selected from a highly competitive field of more than 45 project submissions evaluated by a panel comprising Eisenhower Fellowships trustees, fellows, external experts and senior officials.

Dr. Bari Khan dedicated the honour to the people of Pakistan, whose trust and resilience continue to inspire IHHN’s mission. He also shared the recognition with the network’s donors, partners, government collaborators, doctors, nurses, healthcare professionals, employees and all those who contributed to transforming a shared vision into a nationwide healthcare movement.

Established as a single 150-bed hospital in Karachi, Indus has expanded under his leadership into a nationwide health system serving more than six million patients annually. The network currently comprises 12 multidisciplinary hospitals, four regional blood centres, three physical rehabilitation centres and more than 100 primary healthcare sites and public health initiatives across Pakistan.

During the last year, the network performed more than 67,000 surgeries and recorded over 214,000 hospital admissions, 2.9 million outpatient visits and 1.4 million emergency-room visits. Its services also included more than 16,000 safe deliveries, support for over 212,000 mental-health beneficiaries and malaria screening of more than 6.3 million people.

To reach isolated and underserved populations, Dr. Bari Khan and IHHN have introduced mobile health units, rapidly deployable container clinics, boat clinics and telehealth services. These initiatives provide healthcare to riverine communities, flood-affected areas, deserts, urban settlements and other locations beyond the reach of conventional health systems.

Eisenhower Fellowships President George de Lama said Dr. Bari Khan had transformed his personal vision into an extraordinary national network that had saved countless lives and protected the health of millions of people. He said Dr. Bari Khan’s commitment to providing excellent and dignified care to Pakistan’s most vulnerable communities exemplified the mission of Eisenhower Fellowships.

Dr. Bari Khan’s 2004 Eisenhower Fellowship in the United States played an important role in shaping the network’s development. During the fellowship, he studied healthcare systems and visited hospitals specialising in cardiac and paediatric surgery, gaining exposure to sustainable healthcare models and establishing relationships with international leaders.

A cardiac surgeon by profession, Dr. Bari Khan had demonstrated his commitment to providing free treatment to underprivileged patients well before establishing Indus Hospital. As a student and young doctor, he remained active in the Patients’ Welfare Association and helped establish its blood bank. After starting work as a cardiac surgeon in 1996, he raised Rs35 million from community leaders to establish a cardiac surgery unit at Dow Medical College that provided free surgeries to deserving patients.

Eisenhower Fellowships Trustee Jim Hovey, former vice chairman of its Board of Trustees and former chairman of its Executive Committee, will formally present the award, endowed by him and his wife Carol, to Dr. Bari Khan at the 2026 Eisenhower Fellowships Impact Award Dinner and Pin Ceremony on November 11 at Liberty View in Philadelphia.
