Sindh health minister inaugurates upgraded emergency department at civil hospital karachi

KARACHI: Sindh Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho on Tuesday inaugurated the modernized and expanded Emergency Department at Dr. Ruth K.M. Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi under the “Emergency Department Rehabilitation and Expansion Project” aimed at strengthening emergency healthcare services for the public.

The upgraded facility has increased the emergency department’s bed capacity from 45 to 85 beds, including a 20-bed dedicated isolation ward for patients suffering from dengue, COVID-19, malaria, and heatstroke. A four-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has also been established to provide immediate critical care services for seriously ill patients.

The emergency department has been reorganized into specialized sections in line with modern healthcare standards, including a Fast Track Zone for ambulatory and low-risk patients to ensure quick treatment, a triage area, a fully equipped resuscitation room, separate rooms for doctors and staff, support facilities, and a seminar room.

To improve rapid diagnosis and treatment, X-ray and ultrasound services have also been installed within the emergency department, enabling patients to access essential diagnostic facilities without delay.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho said the Sindh government remains committed to improving healthcare infrastructure and ensuring quality medical services for the public. She appreciated the efforts of Civil Hospital Karachi’s administration and said the enhanced emergency facilities would significantly benefit patients.

Sindh Health Secretary Tahir Hussain Sangi said the upgraded emergency department would improve patient care, emergency response, and the hospital’s capacity to effectively manage seasonal outbreaks and medical emergencies.

Medical Superintendent Dr. Syed Muhammad Khalid Bukhari termed the project a major milestone in improving healthcare services at Civil Hospital Karachi and thanked the Sindh government, health department, and all stakeholders for their support.

Senior doctors, faculty members, hospital administration officials, health department representatives, and other distinguished guests attended the inauguration ceremony.
