KARACHI: The Department of Statistics, University of Karachi, has published the findings of the Tobacco Smoke-Free Compliance Assessment 2026, conducted across selected districts of Sindh to evaluate compliance with smoke-free requirements at public places and in public service vehicles (PSVs).
The findings were formally presented at a dissemination event held at the Vice Chancellor Secretariat, University of Karachi.
Dr. Arfa Maqsood, Chairperson of the Department of Statistics, along with her team, presented the key findings and results of the assessment to government officials, university representatives and other stakeholders.
The event was attended by Dr. Atif Jalib, Additional Commissioner Karachi Division; representatives of the Universities & Boards Department, Government of Sindh; Assistant Director (Academics), Sindh Higher Education Commission; Registrar, University of Karachi; Dean, Faculty of Science, University of Karachi; Tanveer Qaimkhani, Provincial Coordinator PTCCS; Bilal Zafar of PTCCS; and other relevant stakeholders.
The assessment covered five districts of Karachi as well as Hyderabad, Jamshoro and Mirpurkhas, providing evidence on the level of compliance with tobacco smoke-free requirements at public places and in PSVs.
According to the organisers, the findings are expected to assist the Government of Sindh and relevant stakeholders in identifying compliance gaps, strengthening monitoring and enforcement mechanisms, and improving the implementation of smoke-free laws and policies across the province.
The initiative also highlights continued collaboration between academia and government institutions to promote evidence-based tobacco control interventions and strengthen smoke-free environments across Sindh.
