KARACHI: Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) distributed 460 laptops among its talented students under the Prime Minister’s Youth Laptop Scheme during a ceremony held at the university on Monday, aimed at promoting academic excellence and strengthening research culture.

The distribution process was supervised by Meritorious Professor and Vice Chancellor Prof Nazli Hossain, while the university’s focal person for the laptop scheme, Prof Naseem Ahmed Sheikh, oversaw the arrangements.

Among those present on the occasion were Principal Dow Medical College Prof Saba Sohail and Registrar Dr Ashar Afaq, along with faculty members and students from various colleges and institutes affiliated with DUHS.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Nazli Hossain said that the prime minister’s initiative provides students with an important opportunity to enhance their intellectual and creative abilities. She noted that while a laptop is merely a device, its productive use can significantly strengthen students’ research and academic capabilities.
“A laptop serves as an effective tool for educational activities, whereas excessive reliance on smartphones is not as beneficial for academic pursuits,” she said.
She further stated that the scheme helps students meet the demands of the 21st century and ensures facilitation in higher education through a transparent and merit-based distribution process.
Prof Naseem Ahmed Sheikh said the initiative aims to encourage students to engage in research and community service. He added that the government has demonstrated its trust in students by providing them with laptops, which will also contribute to shaping their professional careers.
Registrar Dr Ashar Afaq expressed gratitude on behalf of the university to the Government of Pakistan, the Higher Education Commission (HEC), and the Government of Sindh for supporting the initiative. He also appreciated the efforts of all individuals involved in implementing the scheme at the university.
Students from various colleges, institutes and affiliated institutions of DUHS received laptops strictly on merit during the ceremony.
