KARACHI: The Sindh Healthcare Commission (SHCC) Anti-Quackery Team faced aggressive resistance, harassment and obstruction during an operation against a suspected quackery outlet in New Karachi Industrial Area, District Central.
According to the SHCC, the team had arrived at the outlet as part of a routine anti-quackery enforcement operation when individuals present at the premises allegedly misbehaved with officials and attempted to prevent them from performing their statutory duties.
The situation reportedly escalated after a crowd gathered at the site and allegedly pressured the SHCC officials to abandon the operation and leave the premises. The Commission said members of its team were harassed and temporarily restrained, creating a serious obstruction to the official enforcement action.
Despite the resistance, the SHCC team continued the operation. The situation was eventually brought under control following intervention and coordination by the Deputy Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).
The suspected healthcare outlet was subsequently sealed in accordance with the applicable regulatory process, while the main individuals allegedly involved in obstructing the operation were taken to the police station for further legal proceedings.
The SHCC said intimidation, pressure or resistance would not deter its efforts to curb illegal healthcare practices and protect patients and the general public from quackery.
The Commission also appreciated the timely assistance provided by the district administration and police, saying their support helped ensure the safety of its field team and enabled the enforcement operation to be completed successfully.
