KARACHI: The administration of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), responding to persistent demands from the Young Doctors Association (YDA), has blocked an unauthorized passage connecting the hospital's Emergency Department to Bazarta Line by installing physical barriers, following a recent violent attack on doctors.

The Young Doctors Association welcomed the decision, describing it as a timely and significant step towards strengthening hospital security and ensuring the safety of doctors, healthcare workers and patients.
According to a statement issued by YDA, the incident occurred a few days ago when an ambulance driver allegedly attempted to cross the unauthorized passage and struck doctors with the vehicle, leaving them injured.
The situation subsequently escalated when a mob of approximately 30 individuals allegedly attacked the doctors again, causing serious injuries to several medical professionals.
Following the incident, YDA Sindh Vice Chairman Dr. Mehran Shar and YDA JPMC President Dr. Ammar Danish remained at the hospital throughout the night, standing alongside the affected doctors and pursuing legal action. Their efforts resulted in the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against those allegedly involved in the attack.
The association stated that the unauthorized passage had long been used by certain elements, allegedly associated with an ambulance mafia, for unauthorized movement of ambulances and patients, creating serious security concerns within the hospital premises.
YDA maintained that the closure of the passage would significantly reduce unauthorized movement and help prevent similar incidents of violence against healthcare professionals.
The association further stated that it had repeatedly raised concerns regarding the illegal access route and demanded its permanent closure to protect doctors and other hospital staff.
Appreciating the hospital administration's response, YDA termed the decision a positive development and congratulated the medical community on the implementation of a long-standing demand.
The association expressed hope that the administration would continue taking effective measures to improve security arrangements, prevent unauthorized access and ensure a safe and peaceful working environment for healthcare professionals.
YDA reiterated that violence against doctors and healthcare workers was unacceptable and stressed the need for strict action against those responsible for attacks on medical personnel.
