Deputy Mayor Karachi issues a special message on world diabetes day

KARACHI: Deputy Mayor Karachi Salman Abdullah Murad has called for urgent and collective efforts to tackle the rising burden of diabetes, stressing the need for public awareness, early diagnosis, and healthy living as the world marks World Diabetes Day under the theme “Diabetes Across Life Stages.”

In his message, the Deputy Mayor said that diabetes has become a global health challenge affecting people of all ages, and creating awareness is essential for prevention and control. He emphasized that adopting a healthy lifestyle, maintaining regular physical activity, and consuming balanced meals are the most effective ways to reduce the risk of diabetes.

Salman Abdullah Murad noted that diabetes is a major cause of complications related to eyesight, kidneys, the heart, and the nervous system. He warned that diabetic individuals face a significantly higher risk of heart attacks and stroke, but regular check-ups and timely treatment can greatly reduce these dangers.

He further highlighted the importance of avoiding tobacco use, ensuring routine exercise, and following healthy dietary habits to protect against the disease. He said that preventing and managing diabetes is an integral part of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s public health strategy.

The Deputy Mayor has issued instructions to strengthen the citywide awareness campaign and expand the scope of free screening facilities for early detection of diabetes. He said that hospitals and health centers under the KMC will upgrade services for diabetic patients to ensure better care.

He stressed that regular medical examinations are vital to prevent complications, and timely diagnosis can save thousands of lives. He added that joint efforts are essential to curb the increasing number of diabetes cases in the city.

Salman Abdullah Murad announced that special awareness seminars will be held in schools and public places, calling it a critical need of the time to educate people about diabetes prevention. He urged citizens to adopt a healthy lifestyle to protect themselves and their families from this growing health threat.
