JPMC Administration, Police Agree on FIR and Enhanced Security Following Assault on Doctors

KARACHI: The administration of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), police officials and representatives of the Young Doctors Association (YDA) Sindh have agreed to initiate legal action against individuals involved in a recent violent assault on doctors and introduce stringent security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The decisions were taken during a high-level emergency meeting held at JPMC following an incident in which a mob of approximately 30 to 40 individuals allegedly entered the hospital premises through an unauthorized access point and assaulted medical staff.

The meeting was attended by JPMC Joint Executive Director Dr. Suleiman Arfeen, Security Incharge Dr. Adeel Samoo, SHO Saddar Police Station Arshad Warrich, YDA Sindh Vice Chairman Dr. Mehran Khan, YDA JPMC President Dr. Ammar Danish, YDA JPMC House Officers Incharge Dr. Aziz Baloch, other association representatives and doctors affected by the incident.

During the meeting, hospital administrators and police officials strongly condemned the assault on healthcare professionals, declaring that violence against doctors and medical staff would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

According to a joint statement issued by YDA Sindh and JPMC, it was decided that the hospital administration would itself lodge a First Information Report (FIR) as the complainant against all individuals allegedly involved in the attack, ensuring that those responsible face legal proceedings.

The meeting also expressed serious concern over security lapses that reportedly allowed a group of 30 to 40 individuals to unlawfully enter the hospital premises.

To address these vulnerabilities, officials agreed to conduct a joint security inspection of the affected entry point and take immediate steps to block unauthorized access routes. Additional security arrangements will be introduced to prevent unlawful entry into the hospital.

The participants further agreed to strengthen security protocols across JPMC, particularly around emergency and critical care departments, where doctors and other healthcare professionals frequently work under challenging conditions.

Round-the-clock security arrangements and stricter monitoring of entry points will also be introduced to ensure the protection of on-duty medical personnel.

YDA Sindh welcomed the commitments made by the hospital administration and police, emphasizing that the safety, dignity and professional security of healthcare workers must remain a top priority.

"The safety and dignity of doctors working day and night to serve the public are non-negotiable. We appreciate the proactive stance taken by the JPMC administration and local police, and we will closely monitor the progress of the FIR and security enforcement to ensure such an incident never recurs," the association stated.

The association maintained that hospitals must remain safe environments for patients, attendants, doctors and other healthcare workers, stressing that incidents of violence not only endanger medical professionals but can also disrupt essential healthcare services.

YDA Sindh reiterated its commitment to pursuing accountability for the assault and ensuring effective implementation of the security measures agreed upon during the meeting.
