KARACHI: The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has demanded an immediate high-level and transparent inquiry into alleged corruption and financial irregularities in the health sector, following findings highlighted in the recent Auditor General of Pakistan (AGP) report.
PMA Secretary General Dr. Abdul Ghafoor Shoro expressed serious concern over the reported mismanagement of public funds and called for strict action against those responsible.
According to the PMA, the AGP report identified financial irregularities worth billions of rupees in key health institutions, including procurement-related issues, misuse of funds and violations of audit procedures.
Dr. Abdul Ghafoor Shoro said that important institutions like the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are already working with limited resources, and misuse of public funds directly affects healthcare services, medical research and disease prevention efforts.
He said every rupee allocated for public health belongs to the people of Pakistan and should be spent only on improving healthcare facilities, providing medicines, vaccines and strengthening the health system.
The PMA demanded a comprehensive investigation to identify and take legal action against individuals involved in alleged corruption, along with immediate reforms and restructuring of NIH and other affected health departments.
The association emphasized that qualified, honest and dedicated professionals should be appointed to ensure transparency, accountability and better delivery of healthcare services.
