KARACHI: In connection with World Diabetes Day, the Aga Khan University (AKU) Medical College organized an interactive and educational programme titled “Count, Eat, Repeat — The Fun Way to Eat Sweet,” aimed at helping families understand diabetes management through practical and engaging methods. The event brought together children, parents, and healthcare professionals to promote awareness and improve quality of life for individuals living with diabetes.

The session began with a detailed presentation by Dr. Muzna Arif, who introduced families to the latest glucose monitoring technologies, explaining how advanced tools can significantly improve diabetes control and overall health outcomes. Dr. Fozia Memon then addressed the challenges and daily realities of living with Type 1 diabetes, and shared clear strategies to help children maintain a healthy lifestyle through proper care, emotional support and routine management.

A central part of the event was the practical workshop on carbohydrate counting, where participants learned simple methods to calculate carb intake and make informed food choices. The hands-on demonstrations helped children and parents understand how diet plays a crucial role in controlling blood sugar and maintaining energy levels. The interactive format made diabetes education easy to follow and accessible for all age groups.

The organizers thanked Dr. Khadija Nuzhat Humayun and Dr. Maryam Haider, along with team members Jennifer, Bushra and Hira, for their active involvement and expert guidance. They emphasized that such collaborative efforts are vital in empowering families with the knowledge and tools needed to manage diabetes with confidence.

Parents and children participated with great enthusiasm, turning the programme into a lively learning experience. Organizers said their commitment to better diabetes care reflects a growing awareness within the community, and highlighted that education and early intervention are the strongest tools against diabetes-related complications.
The event concluded with the message that understanding diabetes can be fun, empowering and achievable — especially when families learn and work together toward healthier living.
