AKU’s Digital Immunization Platform Wins International Award for Innovation in Public Health

KARACHI: Aga Khan University’s (AKU) groundbreaking digital health initiative, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Electronic Immunization Registry (KP-EIR), has received a Merit Award at the prestigious Spring 2025 Digital Health Awards®, presented by the U.S.-based Digital Health Resource Center (DHRC).

The recognition places AKU’s KP-EIR among the world’s leading digital health innovations, selected from over 600 global entries submitted across 65 award categories. A jury of 68 distinguished experts in digital health media judged the entries based on innovation, effectiveness, and impact on healthcare.

KP-EIR, developed at the request of the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is a customized version of AKU’s proprietary Hayat platform. This digital registry has transformed the province’s Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) by enhancing data accuracy, accessibility, and programme oversight. Through this innovation, health officials can better monitor vaccination coverage, reduce dropouts, and strengthen accountability at all levels of service delivery.

“We are immensely honoured to receive this Merit award for KP-EIR,” said Dr Saleem Sayani, Director of AKU’s Digital Health Resource Center. “This recognition reaffirms our mission to harness technology for the greater good, especially in advancing public health. The success of KP-EIR showcases the adaptability and scalability of our digital platforms in addressing real-world healthcare challenges.”

The KP-EIR system is now helping ensure that thousands of children across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa receive timely and complete immunization, contributing to broader public health goals and disease prevention efforts.

This international accolade is a testament to AKU’s commitment to innovative, context-driven digital health solutions that strengthen health systems and improve the lives of communities in Pakistan and beyond.
