Doctors Seek Compensation After Atomic Energy Wall Collapse Damages Vehicles at JPMC

KARACHI: Two senior doctors of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) have formally approached the Deputy Commissioner Karachi seeking compensation after their vehicles were severely damaged when the boundary wall of the Atomic Energy Commission of Pakistan (PAEC) collapsed during heavy rains on August 19.

In a joint application, Dr. Naseer Ahmed, Senior Registrar at the Department of ENT, and Dr. Zafar Ullah, Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopedics, reported that the wall adjacent to Doctor’s Colony (House No. D-1) gave way during the unprecedented downpour, crashing onto their official residence and private vehicles.

The damaged vehicles include:

  • A Toyota CHR, 2019 GLED model, owned by Dr. Naseer Ahmed.
  • A Honda Freed, owned by Dr. Zafar Ullah.

The complainants highlighted that the collapse not only caused financial losses but also posed a serious risk to human life, stressing that the wall’s failure was due to negligence and lack of proper maintenance by the concerned authorities.

The doctors have requested the Deputy Commissioner to:

  • Recognize the case as official compensation for private losses under Sindh’s prevailing laws.
  • Initiate proceedings for replacement or compensation of the damaged vehicles.
  • Conduct an official survey to ensure preventive measures and avoid recurrence of such incidents in the future.

They also submitted photographs and documentary evidence of the damages with their complaint.

The incident has once again raised questions about the structural safety and maintenance of government residential premises in Karachi, particularly in light of increasingly destructive urban flooding.
