KMC to Develop Mangrove and Biodiversity Park at China Creek

KARACHI: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced the development of a Mangrove & Biodiversity Park and Learning Centre at China Creek as part of its efforts to promote environmental sustainability, eco-tourism, and climate resilience in the city.

The project was announced by Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab during the inauguration of the Mangrove Park at Ibrahim Hyderi and has now entered the execution phase. Speaking during a visit to the proposed project site, the Mayor said the initiative was a long-term investment in Karachi’s future and reflected KMC’s commitment to environmental conservation and the creation of sustainable public spaces.

Barrister Murtaza Wahab said Karachi, as Pakistan’s economic hub, continues to experience rapid urban growth and infrastructure development, making it essential to place environmental sustainability at the center of the city’s development agenda. He said the project would help protect Karachi’s ecological assets while creating opportunities for education, recreation, tourism, and community engagement.

The Mayor noted that mangroves play a vital role in protecting coastal areas from erosion, rising sea levels, and climate-related disasters. He added that mangrove forests provide important habitats for marine life and contribute significantly to carbon sequestration, making them an effective natural solution for addressing climate change.

He said KMC is among the first district governments in Pakistan to actively pursue a comprehensive green agenda and highlighted several ongoing and planned initiatives related to renewable energy, urban forestry, sustainable development, environmental protection, and eco-tourism.

Barrister Murtaza Wahab said environmental concerns had remained neglected for decades despite increasing urbanization and pressure on Karachi’s natural ecosystems. He emphasized that local governments have a responsibility not only to provide municipal services but also to safeguard the city’s environmental future.

The proposed Mangrove & Biodiversity Park and Learning Centre will include mangrove conservation zones, biodiversity trails, educational facilities, awareness programmes, and eco-tourism attractions. The facility is expected to serve as a destination for students, researchers, environmentalists, residents, and tourists.

The Mayor announced that the project is expected to be completed by November this year and is anticipated to attract millions of visitors annually, becoming one of Karachi’s major environmental and educational landmarks.

Barrister Murtaza Wahab also thanked renowned environmentalist Tariq Alexander Qaiser for his guidance and support in conceptualizing the initiative, acknowledging his contribution to advancing environmental conservation efforts in Karachi.

During the site visit, KMC Financial Advisor Gulzar Abro and other senior officials accompanied the Mayor and reviewed various aspects of the proposed project.
