KARACHI: The University of Karachi’s Department of Biochemistry organized an e-poster competition and seminar titled “Let’s Be Healthy: From Awareness to Action” at the university’s Audiovisual Center on Tuesday, aimed at creating public awareness about health, scientific literacy, and preventive lifestyles.
Addressing the event, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi said that a significant portion of society still ignores scientific facts and neglects early diagnosis of diseases, which contributes to the growing prevalence of life-threatening conditions. He noted that many patients are diagnosed only when illnesses reach an incurable stage and stressed the need for serious efforts to educate people about the importance of science and timely medical care.
He urged students to understand the realities of the modern world, where research, technology, and awareness drive progress. “Educational institutions must not only teach but also help shape healthier, more informed communities,” he said, adding that universities have a moral responsibility to promote public health and scientific understanding.
Dr. Anees Alam, Consultant Nutritionist at Indus Hospital, spoke on “Managing Mental Stress: A Welfare Lifestyle Perspective.” He emphasized that balanced nutrition, regular exercise, yoga, and adequate sleep are essential to maintaining both physical and mental well-being. “Positive thinking and daily physical activity form the foundation of mental health,” he added.
Dr. Arisha Suleman, Assistant Professor at Dow University of Health Sciences, discussed “Chronic Disease Treatment: Reality or Myth?” and dispelled the misconception that chronic illnesses are incurable. She said that with proper medical care, nutrition, and mineral balance, chronic conditions can be effectively managed. She also cited global data showing that mineral deficiencies and toxic elements significantly contribute to chronic diseases.
Syeda Adeeba Rizwan, a freelance Emotional Intelligence Facilitator, highlighted the importance of emotional intelligence for personal and professional growth. She said it enables individuals to understand emotions, make better decisions, and build stronger relationships.
Earlier, Prof. Dr. Shamim Akhtar Qureshi, Chairperson of the Department of Biochemistry, emphasized that maintaining an active and balanced lifestyle is every individual’s responsibility. She encouraged avoiding sedentary habits, exercising daily, managing stress, sleeping well, eating healthily, and refraining from smoking to prevent chronic illnesses.
In the morning session, final-year students Zamaysha, Aamir, Hareem Arshad, and Jyoti Bai Sharmin Mahmood were awarded cash prizes for their e-posters on Thalassemia.
In the evening session, students Javeria Abdul Rasheed, Amara Murtaza, Syeda Maniza, and Nimra Ikram received awards for their presentations on Lung Carcinoma and Bronchogenic Carcinoma.
