Pakistan has highest incidence of breast cancer in Asia, experts warn

KARACHI: Health experts have expressed grave concern over the rising cases of breast cancer in Pakistan, saying that the country now has the highest incidence of the disease in Asia. They urged women to seek medical consultation in case of any unusual symptoms, stressing that early detection greatly improves chances of recovery and survival.

These views were shared at a public awareness seminar titled “Breast Cancer Awareness for Healthier Pakistan” held at the L.E.J. National Science Information Center, University of Karachi. The event was organized by the Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD), in collaboration with the Sindh Innovation, Research, and Education Network (SIREN) and OCKLEY Pakistan.

Speakers included Dr. Rufina Soomro, Professor of Surgery and Consultant Breast Surgeon at Liaquat National Hospital and Medical College; Dr. Omema Salim, Breast Surgeon at Dow University Hospital; and Hira Shahzad from OCKLEY Pakistan.

Dr. Rufina Soomro said that breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, and Pakistan’s high prevalence rate is alarming. She explained that smaller tumors have better chances of cure, while larger cancers are more likely to spread. “Early detection leads to a higher survival rate, less aggressive treatment, and lower healthcare costs,” she noted.

She also highlighted the emotional and psychological impact of breast cancer, including fear of recurrence, changes in body image, and stress on family life, urging families to play a supportive role in patients’ recovery.

Dr. Omema Salim emphasized that education, awareness, and regular self-examinations are crucial in the fight against breast cancer. She encouraged women to perform monthly self-checks and undergo regular clinical screenings. “Early identification of any unusual change—such as a lump, thickening, or discharge—can lead to timely medical attention and a better outcome,” she said.
