ISLAMABAD: The Development Communications Network (Devcom-Pakistan), in partnership with a broad coalition of public and private sector institutions, will host the Second Pakistan Sustainability Summit 2025 on December 3 at the Best Western Premier Hotel in Islamabad. The national event is expected to bring together more than 300 experts and stakeholders, alongside over 10,000 visitors to a parallel sustainability expo, with a central focus on “Sustainable Housing for Economic Resilience & Climate-Smart Living.”

The summit comes at a time when Pakistan faces a deepening housing deficit of more than 400,000 units annually, rapid urbanization, and increasing climate-induced risks. Nearly 40 percent of urban residents continue to live without adequate housing and essential services, underscoring the urgency of reforming national planning and urban development models.
Addressing media professionals on Sunday, Devcom-Pakistan Executive Director Munir Ahmed, a well-known environmentalist and climate advocacy expert, said that the construction and real estate sectors remain crucial to Pakistan’s GDP and employment but also contribute significantly to natural resource depletion and carbon emissions. He noted that Pakistan stands at a critical juncture where economic growth must be aligned with environmental responsibility, long-term energy security, and climate resilience.
Munir Ahmed said sustainable housing offers a transformative pathway for Pakistan through green construction, energy-efficient design, and climate-smart infrastructure. These approaches, he added, strengthen economic stability, reduce environmental degradation, support green job creation and improve quality of life while advancing several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 11, SDG 7, SDG 9, SDG 12, SDG 13 and SDG 8.
He said the summit aims to serve as a high-level national platform for multi-stakeholder dialogue, knowledge-sharing and strategic collaboration. Policymakers, architects, engineers, planners, researchers, financiers, builders, development organizations and community representatives will explore scalable solutions for climate-smart and economically resilient housing. The sustainability expo will feature innovative technologies, eco-friendly materials, smart urban systems, renewable energy solutions and affordable, low-carbon housing models. The Pakistan Sustainability Awards 2025 will also recognize excellence in categories such as green housing, sustainable materials, engineering innovation, architectural design, youth innovation, women’s leadership and environmental reporting.
Munir Ahmed emphasized that Pakistan can no longer expand its cities on outdated, resource-intensive and climate-insensitive patterns. He said sustainable housing is essential not only for cutting emissions and mitigating environmental damage but also for protecting vulnerable populations, reducing long-term energy and housing costs and ensuring economic resilience. Aligning national housing priorities with global sustainability standards, he added, is critical for a livable future.
The summit’s thematic sessions will cover policy reforms, architectural innovation, energy-smart infrastructure, climate finance, social inclusion and the digital transformation of housing systems. Experts will review how national and provincial housing policies can better align with SDG 13 and Pakistan’s wider climate commitments under global frameworks. Presentations will highlight advancements in sustainable design, low-carbon construction materials, renewable energy integration, water-saving technologies and waste-management solutions. The program will also explore the role of digital tools—including IoT, GIS, digital twins and smart-city applications—in improving transparency, optimizing energy use and strengthening long-term housing management.
A major focus will be on green financing, covering climate funds, green bonds, concessional loans, microfinance for low-income housing and carbon credit mechanisms. Community resilience and social inclusion will also be emphasized through affordable housing models, gender-responsive planning, disaster-resilient construction and equitable access to climate-smart services, advancing SDG 5 and SDG 10.
The summit aims to build a national coalition dedicated to accelerating Pakistan’s transition toward sustainable, climate-smart and economically resilient urban development.
