Stray Dog Menace in Sindh, Another Child Dies of Rabies in Karachi

KARACHI: The growing population of stray dogs across Sindh, particularly in Karachi, continues to pose a serious public health threat, as another tragic death from rabies has been reported. A 10-year-old girl from Mirpurkhas died after developing rabies, raising renewed concerns over the lack of effective dog control measures in the province.

Hospital sources said the child had been bitten on the face by a dog two months ago. However, she did not receive proper and timely medical treatment, which led to the development of rabies symptoms. She was shifted in critical condition late last night to Indus Hospital, where doctors provided emergency medical care, but she could not survive.

According to the hospital spokesperson, once rabies symptoms appear, survival becomes extremely unlikely. Medical experts stress that immediate vaccination and complete post-exposure treatment are essential in all dog-bite cases to prevent the disease from progressing.

Meanwhile, the unchecked rise in stray dog populations in Karachi and other parts of Sindh has intensified public concern. Citizens argue that there is no sustained and comprehensive strategy to control or manage the stray dog population. Public health advocates warn that without decisive and consistent action, such preventable deaths may continue.

Health professionals have urged parents and guardians not to ignore dog-bite incidents and to seek immediate medical attention to ensure timely vaccination and save lives.
