WHO Prequalifies New Oral Polio Vaccine; Pakistan Could Use Tool to Strengthen Outbreak Response

GENEVA: In a significant development for the global fight against polio, World Health Organization (WHO) has prequalified an additional formulation of the novel oral poliovirus vaccine type 2 (nOPV2), expanding the arsenal available to countries grappling with outbreaks of vaccine-derived polioviruses.

The prequalification clears the way for United Nations procurement agencies and national governments to access the vaccine for use in coordinated emergency response campaigns. Health officials say the move is expected to strengthen rapid containment efforts, particularly in regions where immunization gaps have left communities vulnerable.

Although wild poliovirus transmission is now confined to a handful of locations worldwide, the threat from circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) continues to challenge eradication gains. Experts caution that where routine immunization coverage falters, mutated strains can emerge and spread, underscoring the need for sustained vigilance.

For Pakistan — one of the last countries where wild poliovirus remains endemic — the newly prequalified formulation offers an additional strategic option. Public health authorities believe its deployment through targeted vaccination drives, coupled with enhanced environmental surveillance and community engagement, could bolster outbreak containment and help close persistent immunity gaps.

Global health stakeholders view the development as a timely reinforcement of eradication efforts, at a moment when fragile progress demands both innovation and unwavering political commitment.
