AI, nanotechnology, and advanced lab tools revolutionize medical research and diagnostics: experts

KARACHI: Experts in medical and clinical biochemistry have emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI), nanotechnology, and advanced laboratory instrumentation are revolutionizing the landscape of medical research and diagnostics. They said such advancements are bridging the gap between laboratory science and real-world patient care.

The views were shared during a one-day pre-conference workshop on “Emerging Trends in Medical Biochemistry” organized by the Society of Medical and Clinical Biochemistry (SOMCB) Sindh Chapter at the Professional Development Center, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), Karachi. The event served as a prelude to BIOCON 2025, SOMCB’s first international conference scheduled later this month at King Edward Medical University, Lahore.

The workshop drew about 100 participants, including senior faculty members, researchers, and postgraduate students from leading institutions such as DUHS, Jinnah Sindh Medical University, Liaquat College of Medicine and Dentistry, Karachi Metropolitan University, Peoples University of Medical and Health Sciences for Women, Bahria University of Health Sciences, Baqai Medical University, Fazaia Ruth Pfau Medical College, Suleman Roshan Medical College, Jinnah Medical and Dental College, and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University.

Prof. Dr. Jehan Ara Hassan, Pro-Vice Chancellor, DUHS, who attended as chief guest, said that such events foster academic collaboration and inspire young scientists to translate innovation into clinical solutions.

In her welcome address, Prof. Dr. Zeba Haq, Host and Convener, underscored that medical biochemistry lies at the heart of diagnostics and modern healthcare, adding that the workshop represents a step forward in equipping professionals with advanced skills and promoting interdisciplinary learning.

During the scientific sessions, Prof. Dr. Danish Hussain, Chairperson of Biochemistry, Dow Medical College, and Dr. Muhammad Bilal Azmi discussed the growing role of bioinformatics in diagnosing and managing genetic disorders.
Dr. Nazish Waris of Baqai Medical University presented on AI-driven research, asserting that artificial intelligence “is not the future—it is the present,” already transforming disease detection and treatment.
Dr. Nazakat Hussain Memon of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University, Larkana, shared insights on advanced lab instrumentation, while Dr. Saadia Qamar, Postdoctoral Fellow at Bahria University, highlighted the accelerating integration of nanotechnology in diagnostics and therapeutics.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Dr. Fauzia Imtiaz of Jinnah Sindh Medical University and closing remarks by Prof. Dr. Zeba Haq, who called for sustained institutional collaboration to advance innovation in medical biochemistry.

BIOCON 2025, hosted by the Society of Medical and Clinical Biochemistry, aims to promote interdisciplinary dialogue on cutting-edge trends in biochemistry, clinical diagnostics, and research.
