KARACHI: The Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) has inaugurated Cardiac Rehabilitation Services at its Ojha Campus, managed by the Dow Institute of Cardiology. The facility, located on the ground floor of the OPD Block (Old Building), was formally opened by DUHS Vice Chancellor Prof. Nazli Hussain, who unveiled the plaque and cut the ribbon.
The ceremony was attended by Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Jahan Ara Hassan, Principal Dow International Medical College Prof. Iftikhar Ahmed, Dr. Tariq Furman, Brig. Shoaib Ahmed, Dr. Rustam Zaman, Dr. Farhan Ishaq, and Dr. Faisal Yameen.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Nazli Hussain said the new service will provide essential guidance and support to cardiac patients, enabling them to return to normal life. She expressed her best wishes for the success of the department. Earlier, she also participated as chief guest in a World Heart Day walk and seminar.
At the seminar, Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Jahan Ara Hassan highlighted that heart diseases claim nearly 20 million lives globally every year, including 500,000 in Pakistan. She emphasized that many of these deaths are preventable through awareness, regular monitoring of diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, and strict adherence to prescribed medicines.
Dr. Tariq Furman noted that despite global efforts, the number of cardiac patients continues to rise. “Many patients consider themselves a burden on society. The Dow University Department of Cardiology is committed to restoring them to normal life, which is the very foundation of this rehabilitation service,” he said. The new facility will provide comprehensive guidance, counseling, and supervised exercise programs for patients recovering from angioplasty and bypass surgeries.
The inauguration concluded with the cutting of a specially prepared fresh fruit cake to mark the occasion.
