Climate-Smart housing in focus as ICCI, Realtors back Pakistan Sustainability Summit 2025

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is preparing for a major national dialogue on climate-smart and sustainable urban development as momentum builds for the Pakistan Sustainability Summit 2025, scheduled to be held on December 3 under the theme “Sustainable Housing for Economic Resilience and Climate Smart Living.” The summit is drawing strong interest from both public and private sectors, reflecting a growing realization that environmentally responsible and economically viable housing solutions are urgently needed to meet climate challenges and urban expansion across the country.

The renewed push for sustainability gained visibility on Saturday when the Founder of the Pakistan Sustainability Summit and Executive Director of Devcom-Pakistan, Syed Munir Ahmed, called on the President of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) and Chairman of the Realtors Association of Pakistan, Sardar Tahir Mahmood, to brief him on the summit’s vision, relevance and national objectives. The meeting underscored the importance of engaging business leaders and the real estate sector in shaping the future of Pakistan’s housing, especially as climate vulnerabilities intensify and urban populations rise.

Extending his full support, Sardar Tahir Mahmood said that sustainable housing is no longer an option but a necessity for Pakistan’s climate resilience and long-term economic stability. He noted that the construction and real estate sectors are a backbone of the national economy but must now align with modern sustainability principles. He said sustainable housing is directly linked to economic recovery, climate-smart living and the well-being of citizens, and assured the full cooperation of ICCI and the Realtors Association of Pakistan in supporting the summit. He added that both organisations would encourage their members nationwide to actively participate and contribute ideas for a greener and more climate-resilient housing future.

According to Sardar Tahir Mahmood, the housing sector is at a turning point as it faces climate change, rising energy costs, water shortages and rapid urbanisation. He emphasized the need to adopt low-carbon construction practices, renewable energy integration, green building standards, sustainable materials and efficient land-use planning to protect Pakistan’s cities and communities.

Environmental expert and summit founder, Syed Munir Ahmed, welcomed the endorsement, calling it a significant step toward mainstreaming sustainability into Pakistan’s development agenda. He said housing is closely linked with climate resilience, public health, economic stability and environmental protection and therefore requires an integrated, multi-stakeholder approach. He stated that the Pakistan Sustainability Summit 2025 is not merely a conference but the beginning of a national movement to rethink how the country builds its homes, cities and communities. He said the goal is to promote housing solutions that are affordable, energy-efficient, climate resilient and socially inclusive in the face of rising climate threats such as floods and heatwaves.

He noted that ICCI’s support reflects the growing awareness among business and real estate leaders that sustainability is now essential for economic recovery, job creation, disaster preparedness and environmental conservation. The summit has already attracted participation from government institutions, development authorities and private sector stakeholders. Keynote speakers include the Director General of the Public Private Partnership Wing at the Ministry of Housing and Works, the Chief Executive Officer of the Pakistan Infrastructure Development Company Limited (PIDCL), and the Chief Executive Officer of the Pakistan Housing Authority Foundation. Experts from urban planning, architecture, renewable energy, finance, water management and climate adaptation will contribute insights on policy reforms, innovative construction technologies, green financing models and regulatory frameworks for a sustainable housing future.

The Pakistan Sustainability Summit 2025 aims to align its discussions with the country’s national priorities and global commitments, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Paris Climate Agreement and Pakistan’s urban development and climate strategies. The summit will address themes such as climate-resilient infrastructure, circular construction, net-zero and low-carbon housing, eco-friendly materials, smart cities and innovative financing models suited to Pakistan’s socio-economic realities.

Devcom-Pakistan, with its long-standing work on environmental sustainability and community-focused development, envisions the summit as a long-term platform for policy dialogue, advocacy and partnerships among government agencies, private enterprises, academia, donors and civil society. As preparations advance, Syed Munir Ahmed said the summit will not only highlight challenges but also present actionable and practical solutions. He stressed that climate-smart housing is now the foundation of a safer, stronger and more resilient Pakistan.

With rising institutional support, the Pakistan Sustainability Summit 2025 is emerging as a pivotal milestone in Pakistan’s journey toward climate-smart living and sustainable economic resilience, marking a new era in how the country plans its housing, urban spaces and environmental responsibility.
