JPMC Forms Three-Member Inquiry Committee Over Alleged Childbirth Incident

KARACHI: The administration of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) has constituted a three-member inquiry committee to investigate the reported incident involving a female patient, Mrs. Nadia, wife of Mr. Akram, following videos and allegations circulating on social media regarding her management at the hospital.

According to an official office order issued by JPMC, the committee has been formed with the approval of the Executive Director. The committee is headed by Prof. Haleema Yasmin as Chairperson, while Prof. Abdul Rab Bhutto and Dr. Saddam Saleh, Assistant Director (Medical), will serve as members.

The committee is scheduled to hold its first meeting on May 30, 2026, to review all aspects of the reported incident. Following the completion of its inquiry, the committee will submit its findings and recommendations to the Executive Director, JPMC, for onward transmission to the Sindh Health Department.
Meanwhile, JPMC has rejected claims circulating on social media that the patient delivered her baby in a hospital washroom. In an official statement, the hospital clarified that the patient was properly attended to by duty doctors upon her arrival at the Gynae Emergency Department.

According to the statement, after a clinical assessment, the medical team decided to proceed with a normal vaginal delivery in the patient’s best interest. The hospital stated that the patient delivered a healthy baby boy in the labour room at 2:50 a.m., adding that reports suggesting the delivery took place in a washroom were “incorrect and baseless.”

JPMC further stated that the patient was found to have high-risk medical complications, including a low platelet count and abnormal laboratory findings, for which she was kept under observation. However, the patient’s attendants later took her home against medical advice (AMA/LAMA).

The hospital administration also noted that the emergency team remained actively engaged throughout the night, managing multiple critical obstetric cases, including normal deliveries, cesarean sections, and blood transfusions.

JPMC officials said the inquiry committee would conduct a thorough review of the matter, and any further action would be determined in light of its findings and recommendations.
