KARACHI: The Asian Academy of Sciences (AAS) has selected Dr. Syed Ghulam Musharraf, Professor at the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, as an Academician of the Asian Academy of Sciences from Pakistan. He is the youngest academician from the country to be inducted into the AAS.
According to a spokesperson of ICCBS, the selection was conveyed through an official communication from the AAS headquarters in Hong Kong, recognizing Dr. Musharraf’s outstanding contributions to the field of mass spectrometry. The spokesperson said that Dr. Musharraf is among the few chemistry professors at the University of Karachi who earned a Doctorate of Science (D.Sc.) degree at an early stage of his career and has been serving ICCBS as in-charge academic since 2007.
Director ICCBS Prof. Dr. Muhammad Raza Shah congratulated Dr. Musharraf on the achievement and termed it a proud moment for both the institution and the country, stating that the recognition reflects the global standing of research being conducted at ICCBS.
Dr. Musharraf is a leading expert in mass spectrometry and is credited with establishing a modern mass spectrometry research laboratory in Pakistan. His pioneering work in biomarker research, particularly through metabolomics and proteomics approaches, has contributed significantly to addressing human health challenges. His research has focused extensively on β-thalassemia, carried out in collaboration with clinicians and researchers around the world.
He has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed research publications with a cumulative journal impact factor exceeding 1300 and an h-index of 43, in addition to several book chapters and edited volumes. He also holds U.S. patents and has received numerous national and international awards, including the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, two Gold Medals from the Pakistan Academy of Sciences, the Gold Medal in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman Young Scientist Gold Medal. He is a Fellow of the Chemical Society of Pakistan, Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (UK), Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK), and a selected member of TYAN, GYA and the Pakistan Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Musharraf has supervised more than 50 PhD scholars, including several Higher Education Commission indigenous scholars. He has also secured multiple competitive research grants from national and international funding bodies, including HEC, SHEC, NIH, Islamic Development Bank, OPCW, PSF and the National ICT R&D Fund.
The selection of Dr. Syed Ghulam Musharraf as an Academician of the Asian Academy of Sciences is being viewed as another major milestone in his academic career and a significant recognition of Pakistan’s contribution to advanced scientific research at the international level.
