Mayor Karachi reviews sewerage treatment & water recycling projects for industrial use

KARACHI: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Wednesday met with industrialists in the SITE Area, Haroonabad, and briefed them on the ongoing sewerage treatment and water recycling projects designed to supply treated water for industrial purposes. Chief Executive Officer of the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, also joined the meeting and briefed the Mayor and the industrialists on the technical aspects and current status of the treatment plants.

The Mayor, accompanied by a delegation of industrialists, conducted a detailed visit to the SITE Limited Sewerage Treatment Plant. He stated that, for the first time in Karachi’s history, a formal process of treating wastewater and recycling it for industrial use is being initiated to ensure a reliable, sustainable, and uninterrupted water supply to industries.

Mayor Wahab informed that the TP-III treatment facility in Mauripur has become operational again after a long gap. Similarly, after twenty-five years, complete cleaning and rehabilitation work has been carried out at the TP-I treatment plant in Haroonabad, while construction at the TP-I facility behind the SITE Industrial Area is progressing rapidly.

He added that the deadline for the completion of the first phase of the project has been set for December 31. In the initial stage, 20 MGD of water will be treated at the secondary level, and one million gallons of water per day will be recycled specifically for industrial use.

A key objective of the project is to stop untreated wastewater from flowing into the sea, thereby protecting marine life and the environment. International environmental standards and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been followed in the planning and execution of the initiative.

Mayor Wahab said that industries in Karachi require nearly 150 MGD of water daily, and this project will help meet a substantial portion of that demand. He expressed hope that if the recycled water system operates successfully, Karachi will become home to Pakistan’s first “Industrial Water Park.”

He emphasized that the Pakistan Peoples Party government is taking serious and result-oriented steps to ensure a sustainable, safe, and quality-controlled water supply to the city’s industries. The water recycling project, he said, will significantly contribute to Karachi’s industrial growth and long-term economic stability.
