KARACHI: The one-month PABIC–ICCBS–COMSTECH Winter Internship Program for Youth 2025 concluded at the University of Karachi after providing hands-on laboratory training to undergraduate and postgraduate students from across the country.
The program, funded by OIC-COMSTECH, aimed to promote multidisciplinary research and enhance awareness and appreciation of modern sciences at local and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) levels.
The internship was initiated by the Pakistan Biotechnology Information Centre under the project titled “Dissemination of Information, Raising Awareness and Capacity Building about the Application of Modern Biotechnology in OIC Member and Observer States,” with funding support from OIC-COMSTECH.
A total of 34 BS and MS students participated in the program and received training in various laboratories of the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences. The participants represented the University of Karachi, Jinnah University for Women (Karachi), University of Turbat (Balochistan), University of Peshawar, Dow University of Health Sciences, University of Sindh (Jamshoro), and NED University of Engineering and Technology.
Addressing the certification ceremony held at the LEJ National Science Information Center, Director ICCBS Prof. Dr. Muhammad Raza Shah said the primary objective of the internship was to motivate students and prepare them for real-world work environments by equipping them with practical skills. He described ICCBS as one of the country’s largest research establishments and a leading center of excellence in chemical, biological, and biochemical sciences, serving as a hub for training scholars from various countries.
Coordinator General OIC-COMSTECH Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, in his address, urged participants to uphold ethics in both life and science. He emphasized the importance of soft skills and adaptability to remain relevant in evolving research fields, adding that excellence can only be achieved through sustained hard work and continuous learning.
