Pakistan to Launch First National Polio Vaccination Campaign of 2026 from February 2

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will launch its first nationwide polio vaccination campaign of 2026 from February 2 to 8 as authorities intensify efforts to interrupt poliovirus transmission amid a continued decline in reported cases.

A formal media briefing in this regard was held in Islamabad on Wednesday, addressed by Prime Minister’s Focal Person on Polio Eradication Ms. Ayesha Raza Farooq and National Coordinator Emergency Operations Centre Muhammad Anwar Ul Haq. The briefing reviewed the current polio epidemiological situation, outlined key operational challenges and detailed preparedness measures for the upcoming campaign.

Officials informed the media that Pakistan has recorded a significant reduction in polio cases, with 74 cases reported in 2024 compared to 31 cases in 2025. They attributed the decline to strengthened programme implementation, improved surveillance and enhanced coordination between federal and provincial stakeholders.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Ayesha Raza Farooq said the downward trend in cases reflected sustained political commitment and data-driven strategies but stressed that the presence of even a single case remained a serious concern. She said complacency could undermine progress and emphasized that the February 2026 campaign was crucial to closing remaining immunity gaps, particularly among children under the age of five.

She underlined the importance of public trust, community ownership and collective efforts by government institutions, partners and frontline workers to ensure that every eligible child is vaccinated during the campaign.

The Pakistan Polio Programme also highlighted the role of the media in supporting eradication efforts through accurate reporting and public awareness, noting that responsible media engagement helps strengthen community trust and reach underserved populations.

During the briefing, officials reiterated the need for sustained political ownership, strong community engagement and public cooperation to ensure the success of the campaign. The leadership of the National Emergency Operations Centre acknowledged the contributions of frontline health workers, security personnel and partner organizations supporting polio eradication activities across the country.

The briefing concluded with a renewed commitment by the Government of Pakistan to interrupt poliovirus transmission and achieve a polio-free Pakistan.
