PMA condemns discrimination against diabetic employees in workplaces

KARACHI: The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has expressed deep concern over the growing trend of workplace discrimination against employees living with diabetes, calling it a serious public health and human rights issue. The association issued a statement in response to a recent International Diabetes Federation (IDF) study which found that 68 percent of employees with diabetes in Pakistan face negative experiences at work — the highest rate among all surveyed countries.

The PMA said the findings expose a troubling culture of bias and neglect that forces many employees to conceal their medical condition or even consider leaving their jobs. The study revealed that more than half of diabetic employees have thought about quitting due to discrimination, while many are denied medical leave or flexibility for regular check-ups. Only one in twenty workers disclosed their diagnosis to employers, fearing stigma and career stagnation.

The association said such conditions are unacceptable and undermine national productivity. It added that diabetes is a manageable chronic illness and patients can lead healthy, productive lives if workplaces adopt inclusive and understanding policies.

PMA Secretary General Dr. Abdul Ghafoor Shoro said the findings highlight the urgent need for systemic change. He noted that the lack of workplace support and understanding creates psychological stress and worsens health outcomes for employees with diabetes.

The PMA urged the government, corporate leaders and human resource departments to take immediate action to eliminate discrimination and ensure inclusivity. It called for mandatory anti-discrimination policies, flexible working arrangements, and awareness campaigns to educate staff and employers about diabetes management.

The association emphasized that employers have a moral and legal obligation to provide a safe and supportive environment where diabetic employees can manage their health without fear of prejudice or penalty. It reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate with all stakeholders to promote awareness and ensure equal opportunities for people living with diabetes across Pakistan.
