Karachi: In a landmark move to improve healthcare standards in correctional facilities, the doctors and paramedical staff of the Home Department, Government of Sindh, formally launched the Sindh Prisons Healthcare Association (SPHA) at a ceremony held at the Union Club, Karachi.
This pioneering initiative aims to enhance the quality, accessibility, and ethical standards of medical care across Sindh’s prison system. The establishment of SPHA represents a collaborative effort between prison authorities, healthcare professionals, and policymakers to uphold the rights and well-being of incarcerated individuals.
“The creation of this association is a significant step toward ensuring dignity, health, and rehabilitation for inmates, while also empowering doctors with the resources and recognition they deserve,” said Dr. Sajjad Rahimoon, President, SPHA.
Key Objectives of SPHA:
- Standardize healthcare practices across all prison facilities
- Ensure regular medical check-ups, mental health support, and emergency care for inmates
- Provide training, career development, and legal protection for prison healthcare staff
- Promote research and policy advocacy on prison health issues
- Facilitate partnerships with NGOs, academic institutions, and public health agencies
With its headquarters based in Karachi, SPHA will begin operations this month. Medical officers, healthcare professionals, and prison administrators across Sindh are encouraged to engage with the association for coordination, capacity building, and collaborative reform.
