KARACHI: Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab formally inaugurated a modern solar-powered water treatment plant in Darya Khan Gabol Goth, Gadap Town, marking a significant step towards improving drinking water supply in Karachi’s suburban areas. The facility has been established by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and promises a reliable, sustainable, and high-quality source of clean water for local residents.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Parliamentary Leader in the City Council Karamullah Waqasi, Gadap Town UC Chairman Mubarak Gabol, City Council members, elected representatives, and a large number of local dignitaries.
Speaking to the media, the Mayor said the project reflects the public welfare vision of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and demonstrates the city administration’s commitment to ensuring essential services for citizens. He explained that the RO plant uses modern technology to purify underground water, making it safe for daily use. The facility has been equipped with a storage capacity of 10,000 gallons per day.
Barrister Murtaza Wahab noted that this is the first such RO plant in Gadap Town and it has already become operational, providing clean water directly to the residents. In addition to supplying water around the plant, 15 water lines have been laid across various streets to ensure smooth delivery. He added that KMC plans to install another 20 RO plants across different villages of Karachi to offer continuous and quality water services to citizens.
The Mayor highlighted that the solar-powered plant consumes low energy, is cost-effective, and offers an environmentally friendly solution that will benefit thousands of residents. He said a similar plant had already been set up in Kemari’s Grex area, and more installations in suburban locations are in progress to provide uniform facilities across the city.
He emphasized that Karachi is moving towards becoming a modern and environmentally friendly city, with the solarization of water systems playing a key role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The filtration system installed in the RO plant has been designed according to the latest global environmental standards to improve water quality and eliminate harmful contaminants.
Barrister Murtaza Wahab said the project will not only protect public health but also contribute to environmental sustainability and efficient use of water resources. He stressed that preventing wastage, expanding modern infrastructure, and accelerating water supply projects remain among the top priorities of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation.
He concluded by stating that ongoing development initiatives are transforming Karachi into a modern, sustainable, and citizen-friendly city. Providing public facilities according to community needs, he said, is the administration’s foremost responsibility and the mission is being pursued with full commitment.
