Ward 9B at JPMC Introduces Gynae Oncology Services

KARACHI: Ward 9B of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) has formally introduced Gynaecological Oncology services, marking a major milestone in the advancement of specialized women’s healthcare in the public sector of Sindh.

The inauguration took place during a session titled “From Vision to Legacy – Ward 9B, A Dream Come True,” organized under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Nighat Shah, Head of Ward 9B and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU). The event highlighted the ward’s journey, achievements, and future plans aimed at elevating healthcare standards across Pakistan.

Ward 9B is the first public sector unit in Sindh to introduce subspecialty services, beginning with Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM), with Infertility services planned for the future, and now the addition of Gynae Oncology. Presentations during the session showcased patient volumes, complex procedures performed, and impactful outreach initiatives.

Prof. Dr. Amjad Siraj Memon, Vice Chancellor JSMU, emphasized the academic importance of these developments, stating that the introduction of subspecialties represents a new era for clinical training and patient care in public hospitals by bridging the gap between academia and advanced clinical practice.

The Chief Guest, Prof. Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal, President of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP), was given a detailed tour of Ward 9B by Prof. Dr. Nighat Shah. He praised the initiative, calling it a remarkable achievement in a public sector setting and a replicable model of excellence.

Prof. Gondal assured full CPSP support for the subspecialty initiatives and the proposed fellowship program, terming it the kind of progress CPSP wishes to promote nationwide. He also lauded Dr. Nighat Shah’s leadership and her acknowledgment of fellows and residents as a hallmark of true leadership.

Dr. Saba Khan explained the operational framework of the Gynae Oncology unit, highlighting the use of a multidisciplinary board approach for the management of complex oncological cases.

Meanwhile, Dr. Erum Majid, Associate Professor, presented the successes of the ward’s Maternal Fetal Medicine outreach program, which focuses on prenatal diagnosis through Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) to prevent thalassemia. The program, already operational in Tando Muhammad Khan, is expanding to Thatta, with a third center planned at CMH Malir, Karachi.

The session was attended by Prof. Khalid Sher, Executive Director JPMC, along with a high-level CPSP delegation, including Prof. Ambreen Afzal (Vice President), Prof. Muhammad Mansoor (Treasurer), and other senior councilors and directors, underscoring the national significance of the initiative.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment from the leadership of Ward 9B, JPMC, JSMU, and CPSP to work collaboratively in transforming this vision into a lasting legacy for Pakistan’s healthcare system.
