KARACHI: Around 20 million people worldwide die annually from cardiovascular diseases, while in Pakistan the death toll has reached 500,000, experts warned at an electrocardiogram (ECG) workshop held at Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS).
Speaking as chief guest, Professor Iftikhar Ahmed, Principal of Dow International Medical College (DIMC), highlighted the alarming rise in heart-related deaths and stressed the urgent need for early diagnosis and preventive measures.
The workshop, organized by the Institute of Cardiology under the Dow Institute of Cardiology (DIC), brought together more than 150 students, doctors, and healthcare professionals. Accredited with five Continuing Medical Education (CME) hours, the session aimed to enhance participants’ practical skills and understanding of ECG interpretation and its clinical significance.
Introducing the workshop, Dr. Tariq Furman, Head of the Institute of Cardiology, pointed out that while ECG facilities are widely available, a lack of expertise in interpreting results often delays diagnosis and treatment, putting patients’ lives at risk. He emphasized that the DIC is committed to improving ECG literacy among physicians to meet the growing challenges of heart disease.
Through expert-led lectures and interactive sessions, participants gained hands-on experience to better recognize ECG patterns and respond promptly to cardiac emergencies.
