Sir Syed University holds seminar on breast cancer awareness as experts call for early detection

KARACHI: The Biomedical Engineering Department of Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology (SSUET) organized an insightful seminar on breast cancer awareness titled “Beyond the Cure: Psychology, Nutrition, and Science in the Fight Against Cancer.” The event was held in collaboration with PASTIC and the EU project BIOMED 5.0, bringing together medical experts, educators, and community representatives to highlight the importance of early detection and preventive education.

Mrs. Erum Akbar Ali Khan, Chairperson of the Zakir Ali Khan Foundation, attended as the Chief Guest. In her address, she emphasized that early detection is the most powerful tool in saving lives. “Awareness is the first step towards prevention. Regular self-examinations and mammograms can lead to early diagnosis, significantly increasing the chances of successful treatment,” she said, stressing that public education and community support are vital in the fight against cancer.

Speaking at the occasion, Member of Sindh Assembly Shariq Jamal noted that while urban populations are increasingly aware of breast cancer, women in remote areas still lack basic information about the disease. He urged greater outreach and awareness campaigns to encourage early consultation with doctors and to break the stigma associated with breast cancer.

Registrar SSUET, Cdre. (R) Syed Sarfraz Ali, highlighted that the university is committed not only to technical education but also to addressing important social and health issues. “Organizing such programs reflects our mission to promote awareness alongside academic knowledge. We hope initiatives like this inspire healthier decisions within society,” he stated.

Prof. Dr. Sidra Abid Syed, Chairperson of the Biomedical Engineering Department and focal person for the event, expressed gratitude to all participants and reaffirmed the department’s dedication to spreading awareness and fostering scientific dialogue on health issues. She noted that progress in biomedical engineering continues to enhance diagnostic tools and treatment outcomes.

The seminar featured expert speakers including Dr. Yabinda, Dr. Sundus Dastagir, Dr. Qudsia Tariq, Dr. Bilal Hassan, Dr. Tahira Mohsin, Samar Abdi, and Engr. Aqsa. Earlier, Afsheen Tariq presented the welcome address, while Dr. Mariam Raziq moderated the event.
