KARACHI: A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday when three final-year students of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) drowned and were martyred at Manora Beach, while three others were rescued and one remains missing.
According to an official statement issued by Dow University, around 150 final-year students of Dow Medical College, Batch D-26, had gone for a picnic to Hawksbay Beach as part of their traditional week-long celebration activities, which include a Qawwali night, dress show, and picnic. The university had arranged the picnic with full security and safety measures in place.
However, fifteen students from the same batch separately planned another picnic at PNS Himalaya, Manora, at a venue reportedly booked by the father of one of the students. The college administration and the Principal of Dow Medical College were not informed about this separate outing.
The students who attended the official Hawksbay picnic returned safely, but tragedy struck the group at Manora when a powerful wave swept one student into the sea. As others attempted to rescue him, multiple students were caught in the tide.
As a result, Ahmed Kashif, Muhammad Asharib Munir, and Syed Ashhad Abbas Fatmi lost their lives. Their bodies were recovered and shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi morgue.
Three students — Rizwan, Rabee, and Abdul Majeed — were rescued and taken to the Trauma Center. Rizwan and Rabee are being treated in the Emergency Room, while Abdul Majeed has been admitted to the Medical ICU.
Dow University’s administration has directed the medical teams to ensure the best possible treatment for the injured students. A condolence meeting in memory of the martyred students will be held on Friday at 9:00 a.m. in Moin Auditorium.
