World Hemophilia Day 2026 to focus on diagnosis as the first step to care

KARACHI: The global bleeding disorders community will unite on World Hemophilia Day under the theme “Diagnosis: First Step to Care.” The World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) announced that the 2026 campaign aims to highlight the crucial role of diagnosis as the gateway to treatment and long-term care for people living with inherited bleeding disorders.

According to WFH estimates, more than three-quarters of individuals with hemophilia worldwide remain undiagnosed, leaving hundreds of thousands without access to basic care. The situation is even more critical for those affected by von Willebrand disease, rare bleeding disorders, and for women and girls who often go undiagnosed due to lack of awareness and diagnostic capacity.

WFH President Cesar Garrido called on the global community to advocate for stronger diagnostic capabilities, emphasizing that without diagnosis, there can be no treatment or progress. He urged healthcare professionals and policymakers to work together to improve laboratory effectiveness and clinical training to ensure earlier and accurate detection of all bleeding disorders.

World Hemophilia Day, observed annually on April 17, encourages global solidarity and action to close the diagnosis gap. The WFH will provide resources such as posters, advocacy toolkits, and communication materials to support awareness efforts worldwide. Updates and campaign materials will be available on the official World Hemophilia Day webpage and WFH social media platforms.

The WFH acknowledged its sponsors for their continued support of this global cause, including Bayer, BioMarin, CSL Behring, Pfizer, Sanofi, Sobi, Takeda, and other leading partners.
